In partnership with the Downtown Tucson-Pima Public Library and El Centro Cultural de las Americas, The Screening Room is pleased to present a showcase of Latino films FREE to the community on Sunday, March 6.

Zoot Suit
Luis Valdez, 1981, 103 min.
Based on his play, Luis Valdez brings to the screen a stylised musical about the arrest of Chicano gang members in 1942 and the resulting controversial trial. In his breakout performance, Edward James Olmos plays El Pachuco, the spirit of the Zoot Suit experience.

Fragmented memories emerge out of grainy, hypnotic visuals as a Mexican-American girl struggles against a history of tradition and expectation to discover her individual voice.

Annina Lavee/Elaine Romero, 1999, 28 min.
When Clara was 18, her best friend Kim died in a car accident. On the anniversary of her death, Kim visits Clara in her dreams and tries to convince her that she's not really dead. (Filmmaker will be present for Q&A)

La Llorona
Trina Lopez, 1998, 17 min.
The Mexican legend of La Llorona, or "The Weeping Woman," is constructed through fragments of image and sound, examining how myth functions in contemporary society.

Espiritu
Maria Elena Chavez, 2000, 12 min.
God or Science? Juana must decide what her ailing mother needs most.

Algun Dia
Pepe Urquijo, 1999, 28 min.
A coming-of-age story about a young Mexican boy, his father and their Mexican community, set during the Proposition 187 campaign, the anti-immigrant initiative in California.

Filmmaker Reception following screenings

The film program is being presented as part of the 2nd annual three-day event, Nuestras Raices: Tucson Celebrates Mexican-American Authors, Arts and Culture, made possible in part by a generous grant from the Friends of the Tucson-Pima Public Library. Other activities will feature the literary arts, live theatre, visual arts & crafts, cultural demonstrations, music and dance.
